These blocks of training are dedicated to building fundamental capacities across a broad spectrum. They serve as a platform from which we can then dictate more direct and specific training protocols.

These blocks are perfect for use whether you want to broadly increase your fitness spectrum, return to play after some time off or used as a bridging block between more specific blocks.



GPP stands for General Physical Preparedness

GPP is “time to build a solid physiological foundation in order to enable the athlete to tolerate training loads seen later in the season” – Tudor Bompa

We are talking about foundational blocks that allow for better training effects in the latter stages of further sport specific training blocks (SPP | Sports-Specific Physical Preparedness).

It is a time to really hone in and work on “weak links” – if you know you’re is lacking in certain capacities, this GPP block is a low-risk time to address them.



Generally speaking, the term GPP originates from strength sports. Taking the concepts there and modifying them to suit athletic populations keeps the core elements whilst keeping the intent high. Strength coaches around the world have begun to see growth in the popularity of ‘strength circuits’. Strength circuits are now widely being used in the search for improving cardiac output. Improving cardiac output is critical for the development of energy systems. Strength circuits will be detailed and shown in the next modules.
